Semantic

Role: Lead UX/UI Designer
Company: Allvue Systems

Context

Allvue partnered with Semantic, a third-party platform, to let users upload documents (PDFs, Excel, Word) and inject that data into our system. While Semantic provided the core functionality, the initial workflow was confusing and fragmented.

I designed a clear, step-by-step experience that fit seamlessly into Allvue’s portfolio monitoring dashboard — improvements that Semantic later adopted for their own product as well.

My Contribution

As the UX/UI Designer, I reimagined the workflow into a logical, user-friendly sequence:

  • Reorganized Layout: Moved the system table (the end state) to the far right, clarifying the process flow from left to right.
  • Step 1 – Document Upload: Designed an upload area that surfaced the uploaded file first.
  • Step 2 – View Uploaded File: Semantic will highlight data points for mapping.
  • Step 3 – Output Mapping: Positioned the mapping interface next, allowing users to connect extracted document fields to system table fields.
  • Step 4 – Review and Reprocess: Introduced a “Reprocess” button to inject mapped data into the system table, giving users a clear preview of the new table.
  • Step 5 – Save or Submit: Enabled users to either save the table so they can continue working on it later or, submit it for approval.

Outcome

The redesigned workflow provided clarity and structure to a previously confusing process. Users could now upload, map, and inject their own data into the system with ease — reducing reliance on manual entry and significantly improving efficiency. The design was so effective that Semantic incorporated it into their own platform, extending its impact beyond our system.
