Rename Set Top Boxes Wireframes

Role: UX Designer
Company: Altice

Context

To make device management easier, Altice wanted to give customers the ability to rename their set-top boxes directly in the Optimum mobile app. Renaming allowed users to assign familiar names (e.g., “Living Room TV” or “Bedroom Box”) so they could quickly identify which device was which. This improved usability and made customer support interactions more efficient.

My Contribution

As the UX Designer, I created detailed wireframe flows using Axure, addressing multiple scenarios and user needs:

  • Renaming Flow: Designed a step-by-step process for users to rename their set-top boxes directly in the app.
  • “Which Box Is Which” Feature (Dial): Added a utility where users could confirm which set-top box they were renaming. The app guided users to turn on their TV, then displayed the current name on-screen to match the correct device.
  • Out-of-Home Handling: Designed an alternate flow to inform users they must be on their home network to rename boxes, preventing confusion when away from home.
  • Error States: Created fallback screens for cases where the rename failed or no set-top boxes were detected.
  • Collaboration & Handoff: Delivered Axure wireframes to an external design contractor in India, collaborated to finalize visuals, and supported handoff to development.

Outcome

The new flow made it simple for users to personalize and manage their set-top boxes, reducing confusion and support burden. By including guidance features like “Which Box Is Which” and handling edge cases with clear messaging, the design ensured a smooth and intuitive user experience.
